What to Pack in Your Hospital Bag, and What to Skip

Hospital bag lists tend to read like you are leaving for a week in the wilderness. You are not. Here is the short, honest version, packed by around thirty-six weeks in case baby comes early.

For you

  • Your ID, insurance details, and any birth preferences on one page. See your birth plan.
  • A long phone charger. Hospital outlets are never close to the bed.
  • A robe, a couple of nightgowns or loose sleepers, warm socks, and slippers.
  • Toiletries, lip balm, a hair tie, and anything that helps you feel human.
  • Comfortable going-home clothes in a forgiving size. You will still look a few months pregnant, and that is completely normal.

For baby

  • A going-home outfit in newborn and size up, plus a hat and a couple of sleepers.
  • A swaddle or two. The hospital provides some, but your own is nice.
  • An installed, rear-facing car seat in the car. Staff often check it before you leave.

For your partner or support person

  • Snacks, a change of clothes, a charger, and a refillable water bottle. Labor is long for them too.

What to skip

  • Newborn diapers and wipes, the hospital supplies these.
  • Most of your wardrobe. You will live in a gown and a robe.
  • Anything valuable. Travel light and keep it simple.
