Board Books for Babies 6 to 12 Months: A Simple Guide
Babies can explore books with their eyes, hands, mouths, voices, and whole bodies. Choose age-appropriate formats, simple shared moments, and books that are comfortable for your family to reread.
Reading with a baby between six and twelve months rarely looks like a quiet story hour. A baby may grab, mouth, pat, turn pages, look at your face, vocalize, crawl away, and come back. That still counts as book sharing.
Choose an age-appropriate physical format
Sturdy books can make it easier for babies to handle pages. Follow manufacturer age guidance and regularly check books and interactive parts for damage, loose components, or anything that could create a safety hazard.
Keep the interaction simple
Name a picture, make a sound, sing a line, let the baby turn a page, or talk about what they are looking at. You do not need to finish a story.
Visual variety is fine
Babies may enjoy faces, contrast, color, photographs, simple illustrations, or bold patterns. There is no single art style every baby needs.
Repetition is welcome
Reading the same short book again can make the interaction familiar. You do not need a large library or a constant stream of new material.
Books are connection, not a baby-reading program
Shared reading can support language-rich interaction, but babies do not need formal reading instruction. Let the book be part of cuddling, play, songs, and everyday communication.
